LibertyFlames.com continues its coverage of spring practice today with LFSN reporter Alan York visiting with Flames' defensive coordinator Robert Wimberly.
On the practice field, Liberty concluded its first week of spring practice today with its first of four Saturday afternoon workouts from 1 to 3 p.m.
Wimberly guided a Flames defense that led the Big South and ranked No. 5 in the country in scoring defense (17.6 points per game allowed) and No. 9 in total defense (313.9 yards per game allowed) in 2013.
The Flames had seven defensive players earn Big South all-conference honors last season, including a conference-best five on the first-team unit (DL – Chima Uzowihe, LB – Nick Sigmon – DB – Walt Aikens, Kevin Fogg and Jacob Hagen).
Wimberly will be trying out several new faces during spring practice this year with Liberty losing seven out of 11 defensive starters from 2013.
The Flames will have the next two days off before returning to the practice field on Tuesday to begin their second week of workouts this spring. Liberty will practice four times next week, including later afternoon workouts on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and a mid-afternoon practice on Saturday.
LibertyFlames.com will continue its spring practice coverage next week with interview with quarterbacks coach Joe Dailey, defensive line coach Vantz Singletary, linebacker Nick Sigmon and wide receiver Gabe Henderson.
