UNCW Shuts Down Liberty

Liberty wrapped up its participation in the Battle of the Beach, falling to host UNCW, 11-0, as Seahawks pitcher Nick Monroe allowed the Flames one hit, Sunday at Brooks Stadium.

Monroe was perfect through the first 8 1/3 innings, facing the minimum 25 batters. Liberty catcher Becker Sankey singled to right field with one out in the ninth inning to end the right-hander's no-hitter bid. The sophomore struck out four and did not walk a batter in his first start of 2014. He moves to 1-0 on the year.

Liberty drops to 3-5 on the season. UNCW moves to 4-3. With the win, the Seahawks have won three straight.

UNCW used a home run from first baseman Corey Dick to take a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Center fielder Casey Golden tripled to the right field wall and left fielder Robbie Thorburn was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Two batters later, Dick connected for his first home run of the year, giving the Seahawks an advantage.

In the third, UNCW extended its lead, batting around and plating five runs. With one out, the Seahawks loaded the bases and scored the first run of the inning on an infield single by right fielder Teddy Cillis. Second baseman Dillion Bass followed by lining a two-run double down the left field for a 6-0 advantage. After a sacrifice fly brought home another run, shortstop Terence Connelly dropped a run-scoring single into right-center field for an 8-0 lead.

A single by Cillis in the UNCW's next at bat during the fourth plated Ryan LaGrange, while the home team tacked on two more in the seventh for an 11-0 advantage.

In the eighth, Liberty first baseman Alex Close lined a Monroe pitch back through the middle of the infield, only to have UNCW shortstop Connelly range behind the second base bag and throw him out, taking a hit away.

Liberty starter Carson Herndon drops to 0-1 on the year. The right-hander gave up eight runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked three batters.

UNCW collected 12 hits off six different Liberty pitchers. Dick led all hitters with three.

The Flames will next face the Missouri Tigers, Tuesday at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
