Behind a no-hitter from Anna Miller, USC Upstate posted an 8-0, six-inning victory over Liberty, on Saturday during the second day of the Spartan Classic at Cyrill Stadium. USC Upstate, receiving votes in both of the national polls this week, remains unbeaten at 13-0. The Lady Flames are now 2-9, after sustaining four straight setbacks. Miller (3-0) fanned 12 Lady Flames in six innings, facing just one over the minimum due to a Spartan error. Alyssa DiMartino fell to 1-4 on the season, allowing three runs on six hits in one inning pitched. Annah Jo Brittingham finished the game, yielding five runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Dana Landers led USC Upstate by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Shellie Robinson batted 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Maddison Kieffer and Kendall Settlemyre both had two hits. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead after Landers hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning. Miller then struck out the side in the top of the second, setting up the hosts for another run-scoring inning. USC Upstate scored twice during the second inning, as the first five batters reached base. After Greeson and Landers came through with RBI singles, making it 3-0, Brittingham relieved DiMartino. Brittingham got the final three outs on a foulout and a double play. After a scoreless third inning, the Spartans tacked on three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jaeger reached on an error to lead off the rally. Robinson hit a two-out RBI double, and then Barnes hit a two-run blast to left, staking the Spartans to a 6-0 advantage. Brittingham worked through a jam in the fifth, as the Spartans led off with consecutive singles. She then retired the next three batters in order, keeping the score at 6-0. Robinson reached on an error for Liberty with one out in the top of the sixth, but Miller left her on first, recording the final two outs. USC Upstate sealed the run-rule victory with RBI doubles from Robinson and Kieffer, as the 8-0 contest ended with one out in the sixth. The Lady Flames will take on Western Carolina, tomorrow at 11 a.m., to conclude their time at the Spartan Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. Liberty fell to the Catamounts today, by a score of 8-7, as Western Carolina held off a furious seventh-inning rally.
