Following their most dominating performance of the season, Liberty's defensive line was honored as a group when they were named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, as released by the conference earlier today.
Liberty's defensive line combined to record 17 tackles (eight solo, 11 assisted), 5.0 sacks, 12.5 tackles for a loss, two quarterback hurries and a forced fumble in Liberty's 24-0 win over Gardner-Webb at Spangler Stadium.
The 24-0 victory was Liberty's first shutout since 2011 and was the first shutout in the eight-year head coaching career of Turner Gill.
Liberty's defensive line also helped the Flames limit the Runnin' Bulldogs to 230 total offensive yards, including 30 rushing yards on 29 carries. Gardner-Webb's 30 team rushing yards are the fewest by a Flames' opponent in 2013 and marks the eighth time Liberty has held an opponent to less than 100 team rushing yards in 19 games under Gill.
Five different defensive linemen recorded sacks during the contest, while six defensive linemen help Liberty record its highest tackle for a loss total since 2002.
This week's other Big South honorees include Charleston Southern running back Christian Reyes (Offense), Coastal Carolina return specialist Devin Brown (Special Teams) and Charleston Southern running back Mike Holloway (Freshman).
The Flames will begin a three-game homestand this Saturday when they welcome fellow Commonwealth opponent VMI to Williams Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
