The Flames celebrate a goal last season. After two exhibition games, Liberty will open its 2013 schedule at Georgia State on Aug. 30.
2013 Liberty Men's Soccer Schedule
A non-conference match at N.C. State and seven home contests highlight a challenging 2013 slate for the Liberty Flames men's soccer team.
"I feel we have put together a schedule that features a number of teams with NCAA tournament experience," stated head coach Jeff Alder, who will enter his 13th year at the helm of his alma mater. "The different styles of play we will see in our non-conference schedule will stretch our group and prepare us for conference play." "Our conference is now consistently a two-bid league [to the NCAA Tournament] and the depth in the conference this year is at an all-time high. We consistently ask our group of men if our good is good enough and that question will be answered with this schedule."
Liberty will get its 2013 season underway with exhibitions against Virginia Tech and UNCG. The Flames will visit Virginia Tech on Aug. 17, while facing UNCG at Osborne Stadium on Aug. 24.
Six days later, Liberty will begin its 2013 regular season and the 38th year of Liberty men's soccer by traveling to Atlanta, Ga., to meet Georgia State. The Flames will then open their home schedule by welcoming IUPUI to Osborne Stadium on Sept. 6. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The following week, Liberty will begin a three-game road swing and play six of their next seven matches away from Lynchburg. The Flames will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for a contest at Wofford on Sept. 11, before starting Big South Conference play on Sept. 14 at Gardner-Webb. After a seven-day break, Liberty will complete the swing with a trip to Washington, D.C. to face American.
The Flames will return to Osborne Stadium on Sept. 24 for a Big South match against VMI. The contest will start a stretch of three conference games, as Alder's team will close out September at UNC Asheville on the 28th and begin October at High Point on the first.
Liberty completes a three-game road stretch with a non-conference match at Davidson on Oct. 9.
The Flames will return to Osborne Stadium on Oct. 12 against Big South opponent Winthrop. The match begins a three-game homestand for Liberty. The Flames will also host Howard on Oct. 15 and conference foe Presbyterian College on Oct. 18.
Liberty then is slated to take to the road for two games. The Flames will visit N.C. State on Oct. 22, before meeting Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. on Oct. 25.
Alder's team will finish the 2013 regular season with a Big South road game sandwiched between two conference home matches. The Flames will face Longwood at Osborne Stadium on Oct. 29, followed by their final road contest of the year at Campbell on Nov. 2. Liberty's regular season will come to close, when the Flames host Radford on Nov. 6.
Liberty will pursue the Big South title, starting Nov. 12. The Conference's top eight teams will square off at the home field of the top four teams that day. The winners will then advance to the semifinals on Nov. 15, with the Big South Championship final on Nov. 17. The semifinals and finals will be played at Bryan Park Soccer Complex in Greensboro, N.C. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
