6 Flames Make VaSID Academic All-State Team

Liberty student-athletes Jorge Azuero, Helen Doolittle, Becca Haraf, Pat Kelly, Max McKay and Lauren Stell are all part of the 2012-13 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) Academic All-State Team.

Every Commonwealth college and university, including NCAA Division I, II, and III, NAIA, and independents, had the opportunity to submit athletes to be honored. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better. The student must have achieved sophomore status, and he or she could not have been in the first season of competition at their current school.

Azuero became just the second Flame ever to be voted Big South Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The business finance major with a 3.95 GPA while going 14-5 in both singles (No. 4) and doubles (No. 2, with Dillon Segur) during his sophomore campaign.

Doolittle, an interdisciplinary studies major with a 4.0 GPA, made the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team and the NorPac All-Academic Team as a sophomore. Also an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction in 2012, Doolittle started all 22 games at midfielder for Liberty's NorPac runner-up field hockey team.

Haraf was Liberty's first Big South Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year since 2004, boasting a 4.0 GPA as a biology/pre-med major. The junior served up a team-high 39 aces for the Big South champion Lady Flames.

Kelly adds to an already impressive list of academic honors, highlighted by his FCS ADA Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and his second straight Capital One/CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America notation. The wide receiver ranked No. 11 nationally with 7.27 receptions per game as a senior, before graduating with a 4.0 GPA in exercise science.

McKay was tabbed Big South Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year and named to the conference's all-championship team, after sharing fourth place at the Big South Men's Golf Championship. He graduated with a 3.90 GPA in business finance and currently owns a 4.0 GPA as he works toward an MBA degree.

Stell graduated with a 4.0 GPA in graphic design on the heels of a successful four-year career on the women's soccer team. She was a two-time all-conference honoree and scored three game-winning goals as a senior. Stell was one of six student-athletes who earned the 2013 Big South George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence, a list which also includes Kelly.
