Carey Green was voted VaSID State Coach of the Year while Devon Brown was named State Player of the Year.
Liberty took home two of the top Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) 2013 University Division All-State Women's Basketball honors on Wednesday, as redshirt senior guard/forward Devon Brown was named State Player of the Year and Carey Green was tabbed State Coach of the Year. Longwood's Daeisha Brown was the other major honoree, earning State Rookie of the Year laurels. Meanwhile, Devon Brown was a VaSID first team all-state member with fellow Lady Flames redshirt senior Tolu Omotola making the second team. Devon Brown is the first Lady Flame to be recognized as VaSID State Player of the Year since Megan Frazee won the award as a senior in 2009. This is Brown's second State Player of the Year nod this season, after receiving the same distinction from the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Brown was also voted Big South Championship MVP for the second time, made the first team All-Big South roster for the fourth year in a row and garnered three Big South Player of the Week honors. The Waynesboro, Va., native led the Lady Flames in scoring (16.5 ppg), steals (66), three-pointers made (47) and free throw percentage (.837). During Liberty's NCAA Tournament game against Purdue, she became the second player in program history and fourth player in Big South Conference annals to score 2,000 career points. For Green, this is his fourth VaSID State Coach of the Year honor but first since 2006. He guided the Lady Flames to a 27-7 record, a sweep of the Big South regular-season and tournament titles and a berth in the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. Liberty tied the Big South record for conference victories by going 16-2 in league play. The Lady Flames went 8-0 against Virginia opponents, highlighted by their first-ever road win over James Madison. Green's squad also topped the nation in rebound margin (+16.9) for the second straight season and fifth time during his 14 years at the helm of the Lady Flames. Speaking of rebounding, Omotola topped the Lady Flames and ranked seventh in the Big South with 7.6 rpg this season. She also finished second in the conference and 15th nationally in field goal percentage (.530), while ranking ninth on the Big South scoring list at 13.1 ppg. Omotola was a first team Richmond Times-Dispatch All-State honoree and a first team All-Big South performer. The native of Houston, Texas additionally made the Big South All-Tournament Team and earned a trio of Big South Player of the Week awards as a senior.
