Spring Football Update with Grant Bowden

Continuing in its coverage of Liberty's annual spring practice, FSN reporter Alan York visited today with punter Grant Bowden and outside linebackers coach Josh Bookbinder.

Bowden transferred to Liberty from Virginia Tech last summer and made an immediate impact on the program, earning all-Big South second team honors.

He finished the 2012 season ranked No. 2 in the Big South in punting average (39.4 avg. yards per punt) and No. 3 in total punts (60). He averaged 40 or more yards per punt in six games and 18 of his punts pinned Liberty's opponents inside their own 20-yard line.

Bowden was named the Big South Special Team Player of the Week the final two weeks of the regular season. His first conference weekly honor came after he averaged a season-best 44.3 yards per punt while helping the Flames knock off No. 6 Stony Brook during the Flames' home finale.

Bookbinder is in his second season with the Flames and the first as a member of Liberty's coaching staff. After joining Liberty last year as the Flames' defensive quality control staff member, Bookbinder was named Liberty's special teams coordinator in January and outside linebackers coach in February.

On the practice field today, the Flames had their final tune-up before their annual Spring Football Game on Saturday. Gates will open at Williams Stadium at Noon with the intrasquad scrimmage set to begin at 1 p.m.
