Mychelle Cumings placed fifth in Section A of the women's discus on Friday, thanks to a season-best heave of 164-0.

Liberty sophomore Mychelle Cumings made the most of a busy Friday at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. She finished fifth in Section A of the women's discus and later notched an ECAC qualifier in the women's shot put, making her the Lady Flames' top performer on the day in the Lone Star State.

Three of Cumings' discus tosses sailed past 155 feet, including her third attempt, which landed at a season-best 164-0. That placed the Tennessee native fifth among a talented field and four spots ahead of Duke's Erica Brand, the 2012 ECAC champion and an NCAA national qualifier.

Cumings later threw the shot put 46-1.25 in her outdoor season debut in the event, under the Mike A. Myers Stadium lights. That placed her 14th in Section A, a mark that ranks No. 1 in the Big South this season and punched her ECAC ticket.

Fellow thrower Christina Mitchell suffered her first javelin setback of 2013 but managed to finish in 11th place in Section A. Her top throw pierced the ground at 138-4.

Wrapping up the day's field events, sophomore Kyle Wheeler matched his season best in the high jump while competing in his home state. His 6-10.75 clearance placed eighth in Section B of the event.

Liberty's sprinters and hurdlers clocked fast times on Friday, aided by gusty tailwinds. Tarell Williams (10.76) and Roderick Spruel (10.79) both notched IC4A qualifiers in the men's 100-meter dash prelims.

On the women's side, Abigail Flower dropped her 100-meter dash personal best to 11.83 seconds, moving up to fourth in program history. Freshman Brittney Webley posted a season-best 14.35 clocking in the women's 100 hurdles prelims, claiming the No. 8 spot on Liberty's all-time list but missing the ECAC standard by just .01 second.

Spruel, Williams, Andre Washington and Paul Arslain ran to a ninth-place finish in the men's sprint medley relay, crossing the line in 3:28.82.

Earlier in the day, Washington, Kyle Gill, Leonard Robbins and Arslain notched a season-best 4 x 400 relay time of 3:15.09.

Liberty will wrap up its busy week of competition on Saturday, with athletes set to compete in both the Raleigh Relays and Texas Relays. Lyndi Fielitz and Meredith Mistretta will get the day started in Raleigh with section 2 of the women's 10K at 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, Jocelyn Williams will be the first Lady Flame out of the gate in Austin, throwing the discus at 11 a.m. Eastern.
