Cameron Richard collected a title in the Flight 3 consolation bracket at the FGCU Invite this weekend.
In preparation for its first dual match of the 2013 season on Friday versus Appalachian State, the Liberty women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Florida Gulf Coast Invite today. The Lady Flames faced a strong lineup of opponents at the invitational, including players from the host Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, No. 53 North Texas, Big 12 member Iowa State, North Florida and Northwestern State.
Cameron Richard highlighted play for Liberty in singles play, claiming a title in the Flight 3 consolation bracket. After dropping a hard-fought opening match to Andrea Nedorostova of Northwestern State, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7, the junior responded with a straight-set win over Florida Gulf Coast's Morgan Bechtel, 6-3, 6-1. In the consolation final, Richard downed Jenna Langhorst of Iowa State, 6-2, 6-2.
Rebekah Jenkins claimed the lone first-round victory for Liberty in the singles flights. The Florida native captured a straight-set win over Northwestern State's Daniela Simonova, 6-2, 6-3.
Valerie Thong, Jessie Boda and Annisha Domenech also collected one singles win each over the weekend for the Lady Flames.
In doubles matches, two doubles tandems earned victories for Liberty. Boda and Domenech grinded out a tough 9-8 (9) win against Iowa State's Claudia Ortiz and Emma Waites. Thong and Jenkins tallied the other doubles victory for the Lady Flames.
The Lady Flames return to the court on Friday against Appalachian State at 4 p.m. Liberty's first dual match of the season will take place at the Greenbrier Resort in Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
