Liberty senior Josh McDougal made a successful 2007 season debut, running to a seven-second victory, Friday afternoon at the Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational, held at Notre Dame's nine-hole golf course. His efforts helped the Flames tie for ninth in the blue race, while the Lady Flames took runner-up honors in the gold race.

Josh Cox, a 1998 Liberty graduate, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon for the third time. His winning time of 2:20:55 at Saturday's U.S. Air Force Marathon in Dayton, Ohio punched his ticket for the Trials, which will be held Nov. 3 in New York City.

The Liberty men's and women's cross country teams are both listed in the initial installment of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Regional polls. The Flames have achieved their highest-ever ranking, No. 4, while the Lady Flames are No. 11.

With Josh McDougal and some of the other Liberty cross country stalwarts sitting out the season's inaugural meet, Saturday morning's Virginia Tech Invitational, some of the younger Flames and Lady Flames took advantage of their chances to shine. Leading the way were sophomore Josh Edmonds, who eclipsed McDougal's men's course record, and junior Rebekah Ricksecker, the women's overall runner-up.

Last season, Liberty swept the Big South men's and women's cross country team titles for the first time in 14 years, serving as a achievement for the program. With all of the major protagonists from those championship squads returning in 2007 and some promising newcomers thrown into the mix, the Flames and Lady Flames are hoping to make a bit more history. Both Liberty teams harbor ambitions of qualifying for the NCAA National Cross Country Championships for the first time ever.
