Liberty juniors Jon Hart, Carol Jefferson and Piper Newby opened the 2007 outdoor track and field season with a bang, as each set a school record during the Coastal Carolina Invitational, Friday and Saturday. The trio was among 10 Flame event champions.

Liberty junior Josh McDougal placed eighth in the 5,000-meter final Friday evening at the NCAA Division I National Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Center. With his finish, McDougal is now an eight-time All-American.

Liberty juniors Carol Jefferson and Josh McDougal have been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Women's and Men's Indoor Track Athletes of the Week, respectively, after both enjoyed record-setting 5,000-meter races in Boston over the weekend.

When Liberty University Head Track and Field/Cross Country Coach Brant Tolsma penned his book, "The Surrendered Christian Athlete," little did he know it would be sought after by a family of runners from upstate New York. Surely enough, Lisa McDougal mailed Tolsma her order form, scribbling a note about her distance-running sons in the margin.

Junior Josh McDougal raced to a 13:37.32 clocking while winning the 5,000-meter title at the IC4A Championships Sunday at Boston University, setting several records and helping the Liberty men's indoor track and field team place eighth at the meet. Meanwhile, the Lady Flames tied for 31st across town at the ECAC Championships, hosted at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.

Junior Carol Jefferson broke her own Big South Conference and Liberty record in the 5,000 meters, highlighting Liberty's performances on Saturday at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet was held in Boston, in conjunction with the men's IC4A Championships.

In our culture today, running has become a metaphor for many different things. People run away from things, but most of the time, they are not physically running. People run toward things, but again, this often means they are actively engaged in making a choice. For Liberty track star Arlene Zelinskas, the 2006 Big South Indoor Track Women's Outstanding Performer of the Year, running has also acted as a vehicle for change, and part of her very unique story.
