Two days after his Liberty volleyball team won its first Big South Conference title since 2001, Lady Flame head coach Shane Pinder has signed two players, Courtney Boggs and Claire Jacobsma, to national letters of intent for the 2008-09 academic year.

For the first time since 2001, the Liberty volleyball team captured the Big South Volleyball Championship, Saturday afternoon at the Vines Center. A true team effort allowed the top-seeded Lady Flames to sweep second-seeded Winthrop, 3-0 (30-17, 30-23, 32-30), ending the Eagles' five-year reign as conference champions.

For many players on Liberty's young volleyball team, Friday evening's Big South Volleyball Championship semifinal match versus Coastal Carolina at the Vines Center was a brand-new experience. However, the No. 1 seed Lady Flames were able to continue their late-season run of success, sweeping the No. 4 seed Chanticleers, 3-0 (30-16, 30-28, 30-26), to advance to the Big South Championship match for the first time since 2002.

For the first time since 2001, Liberty hosts the Big South Volleyball Championship at the Vines Center, but the Lady Flames will not take the court until Friday at 7 p.m., in the second of two semifinal tilts. Liberty, by virtue of its No. 1 seed, has earned a first-round bye, as the Lady Flames seek their first conference title since 2001.

Liberty garnered two of the four major awards announced at this evening's annual Big South volleyball awards banquet, held at the Kirkley Hotel in Lynchburg. Right-side hitter Nicki Scripko claimed the Big South Freshman of the Year trophy, while Shane Pinder won the first Big South Coach of the Year award of his career.

Liberty's opening match of the 2007 Big South Volleyball Championship has been shifted from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday evening at the Vines Center. The No. 1 seed Lady Flames will still meet either No. 4 Coastal Carolina or No. 5 Radford, in the second of two semifinal tilts.
Liberty's senior volleyball trio was treated to a memorable Senior Night, Saturday at the Vines Center, as the Lady Flames swept past Radford, 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-16). Liberty's 14th-consecutive victory enabled the Lady Flames to claim a share of the 2007 Big South Conference regular-season title, the team's first since 2003. Liberty will open next week's Big South Volleyball Championship at the Vines Center as the No. 1 seed.
