Stokes and Umberger Shut Out VMI, 4-0

David Stokes and Dustin Umberger combined to keep the Keydets off the scoreboard throughout the game and the Flames broke up a pitchers' duel with a four-run eight inning as Liberty downed VMI, 4-0, Friday night, in the opener of a three-game Big South series at Gray-Minor Stadium.

Baseball Notes - Games 54-56 - at VMI

The Liberty University Flames (31-22, 12-6 Big South) travel to Lexington, Va., for a three-game Big South Conference series with the VMI Keydets at Gray-Minor Stadium, Friday through Sunday. The series will mark the final three games of the regular season for both teams and will play a key role in seeding for the upcoming conference tournament scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

After Winthrop had scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning, the Liberty Flames rallied for two runs in bottom half of the frame to claim their 30th victory of the season, a 6-5 win over the Eagles, Saturday afternoon in a Big South Conference game at Worthington Stadium.

Liberty third baseman David Giammaresi hit his first home run of the season and the Flames broke a 4-4 tie when a run scored via a balk in the bottom of the eighth inning, to edge Big South Conference leader Winthrop, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Worthington Stadium and snap a six-game losing streak.

For years, baseball's best late-inning relievers have had their entrances accompanied by playing of trademark theme songs, such as Guns and Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" for Eric Gagne, Metallica's "Enter Sandman" for Mariano Rivera and Billy Wagner, etc. This season, Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" has helped mark the entrance of Liberty senior closer Tim John.
