The Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex, Liberty’s on-campus outdoor track & field facility, was completed in 1989, the first year the Flames competed at the NCAA Division I level. Located adjacent to Williams Stadium, the complex is named for the founder of the Liberty track & field program, Jake Matthes, and Liberty’s first women’s track coach, Ron Hopkins.

The facility was renovated in 2012 by Beynon, including a complete rebuilding of the track surface. The Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex now features eight 48-inch lanes, two shot put sectors, two discus rings, two pole vault runways and two long jump/triple jump runways. Additionally, the javelin runway and steeplechase pit were both moved from the north end of the facility to the south end, with the steeplechase pit now being located outside the track oval.
