Programs: Cultural Competency

Program Description

In an effort to foster an appreciation of other cultures, this initiative involves a multitude of projects and opportunities that include, but are not limited to:

  • Training for academic units/schools
  • In classroom instruction provided by the Associate Director of Student Engagement, Director of Education & Professional Development, or Graduate Student Assistant
  • Resource networking for ongoing engagement with institutional diversity advancements

Cultural competency programming is intentional about student, faculty, and staff development through engaging and advancing their awareness, knowledge, and skills.

  • Multicultural Awareness constitutes those values, attitudes, and assumptions essential to working with those culturally different than one’s self
  • Multicultural Knowledge is content knowledge about various cultural groups that are typically not taught in preparation programs
  • Multicultural Skills consist of those behaviors that allow one to effectively apply multicultural awareness and knowledge that has been internalized.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15- October 15)
  • African American History Month (February)
  • Women’s History Month (March)
  • Lecture Series
  • Alternative Convocation
