Programs: Cultural Competency
Program Description
In an effort to foster an appreciation of other cultures, this initiative involves a multitude of projects and opportunities that include, but are not limited to:
- Training for academic units/schools
- In classroom instruction provided by the Associate Director of Student Engagement, Director of Education & Professional Development, or Graduate Student Assistant
- Resource networking for ongoing engagement with institutional diversity advancements
Cultural competency programming is intentional about student, faculty, and staff development through engaging and advancing their awareness, knowledge, and skills.
- Multicultural Awareness constitutes those values, attitudes, and assumptions essential to working with those culturally different than one’s self
- Multicultural Knowledge is content knowledge about various cultural groups that are typically not taught in preparation programs
- Multicultural Skills consist of those behaviors that allow one to effectively apply multicultural awareness and knowledge that has been internalized.
Program Opportunities include (but are not limited to):
- Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15- October 15)
- African American History Month (February)
- Women’s History Month (March)
- Lecture Series
- Alternative Convocation
