Cognitive Development in the First 2 Years of Life

Section 2 Introduction - In the early 1900’s, Jean Piaget observed that infants were active learners, interacting with their environment to develop awareness and understanding of their world. Today researchers use a variety of high-tech methods to show that infants and young children are capable of complex cognitive tasks, and this is long before they are able to verbally express their ideas. Studies of early childhood cognition typically focus on children’s ever-increasing ability to sense, process, and act on things in their world. In studying early childhood cognition, it is also important to consider memory and language development.
