Select Camp showcases Liberty to incoming DI, II, and III men’s hockey prospects, who showcase skills
Liberty University’s ACHA Divisions I, II, and III men’s hockey teams hosted their annual Select Camp last Wednesday through Friday at the LaHaye Ice Center, recruiting and attracting more than 60 players who are interested in trying out for the Flames’ three-tiered program this fall or in the future.
“The three days of camp were amazing,” said Ben Hughes, Head Coach of Liberty’s DII men’s squad who also serves as Club Sports Director of Recruitment. “We were really thrilled with the outcome of camp … and the product on the ice. Every year, we’re looking to make it better, and I think we did this year, as well. We were a little bit more proactive in reaching out and with the scouting aspect of the camp.”
Flames DI men’s Associate Head Coach and Club Sports Senior Associate Athletic Director Jeff Boettger assisted Head Coach Kirk Handy and Hughes as well as DIII men’s Head Coach Josh Graham in evaluating the talent at hand as they competed in four different games over the course of two days.
“The camp was a lot of fun, feeling the energy, especially with either guys who have been here for the first time or they’re coming back,” Boettger said. “You get to see who are the kids you want to keep an eye on for the future as well as to zone in and focus on the guys who are strongly considering Liberty for this next year, to be able to give them some positive feedback and some constructive criticism, as well.”
A new highlight of the camp was a panel discussion and catered dinner on the evening before camp sessions started, which drew more than 100 players and parents to the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.
