Rifle team sweeps third place in Air Rifle, Smallbore at ASSA Nationals
Liberty University’s rifle team set new program records with its Smallbore, Air Rifle, and combined team scores to place third in all three categories at the 2022 ASSA Intercollegiate Rifle Club National Championships over the weekend at X Count Range in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The team sent six female competitors — junior Kristen Gagne, freshmen Claudia Weber, Payton Peppard, and Devin Peppard, sophomore Courtney Horn, and senior Katherine Gray — to the event and they accumulated scores of 2231 in Smallbore Rifle, 2290 in Air Rifle, and 4521 in Aggregate.

Gagne placed second individually in the Smallbore discipline with a 572 score out of a possible 600, just three points behind national champion Lara Spanic. She also finished fifth with her overall Aggregate (1143) score and landed on the All-Star Smallbore, Air Rifle, and Overall first teams.
Weber finished fourth in Smallbore (566) and made the All-Star Smallbore and Overall first teams, while Payton Peppard placed fourth in both Air Rifle (580) and Aggregate (1144), ultimately being selected to the All-Star Smallbore and Overall first teams and Air Rifle Second Team.
“We met our team goals by going to higher level competition to prepare for Nationals, and I am very proud of the girls,” Liberty Head Coach Marlene Gray said.
