Liberty DII earns win over Blue Hens
A goal by Brent Boschman late in the second period capped a Flames comeback and put Liberty’s Division II men’s hockey team up for good as it skated to a 9-6 victory at Delaware.
The Blue Hens put up the first point on the scoreboard at Fred Rust Arena six minutes into the game as Matt Gumina scored on a power play. Neal Henderson knotted the score up at one 10 minutes later off a pass from DJ Dinnison.
The first period continued in back and forth fashion with Delaware’s Michael Gunderson putting the Blue Hens up 2-1 and Clinton Nigh scoring for the Flames on a power play to tie it back up. Gumina assisted Chris Lambrinakos with 60 seconds left in the opening period to give Delaware a 3-2 advantage heading into the break.
One more Delaware goal a minute into the second would put the Blue Hens ahead 4-2 before Liberty would gain control. Three minutes later Aaron Semiao found the back of the net for the Flames, thanks to a Dinnison assist, and Semiao returned the favor, assisting Dinnison to the tying goal.
With the score knotted up at four, Brent Boschman found the back of the net on a breakaway with five minutes left in the second frame, giving the Flames the lead for good.
In the final period Liberty poured on the offense. Celeb Allison notched his sixth goal of the year midway through, despite a one-man advantage for Delaware. Nigh then added another score to put Liberty up 7-4 and John Cotton finished off a power play, pushing the spread to four.
The Blue Hens broke the run with five and a half minutes left in the game as Oliver Peloso scored. With three minutes to go Boschman put in his second goal of the night, giving the Flames a 9-5 margin. Derek DiDonato scored for Delaware with less than 30 seconds to go, setting the final tally.
Trenton MacDonald made 24 saves to earn the victory for Liberty, while Patrick Rochefort took the loss for Delaware.
The Flames continue their three game road swing Saturday afternoon with a matchup against the Maryland Terrapins at 3:55 p.m. in the Laurel Ice House.
