Hunt Seat equestrian third in final Region 4 show at Liberty; sends five riders to regionals at SBC
Hosting the regular-season-ending Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) Region 4 Hunt Seat event Saturday at the Liberty Equestrian Center, the Lady Flames finished in third place behind Sweet Briar and Randolph Macon to lock up that spot in the final team standings.
Individually, senior Nadia Cooper finished first in Open Fences and fourth in Open Flat to clinch the Zone 4, Region 4 High Point Rider Award and she will move on to the Zone 4 Championships to compete for the coveted Cacchione Cup.
Cooper and sophomore Maggie Saunders, who placed second in Open Flat, qualified for this weekend’s Region 4 Championships in that individual event, which will be held Sunday at Sweet Briar College. Cooper also qualified for regionals in Open Fences while Juliana Gorena qualified in Limit Flat and Limit Fences and fellow senior Carly Woods qualified in Limit Flat. Freshman Ellie Bruss will also make her regional debut in the Novice division.
Gorena earned Reserve High Point Rider honors after placing second in Intermediate Flat and third in Intermediate Fences.
Lady Flames junior Briley Boan finished first in Novice Equitation, Flames freshman Tristan Battin placed second in Limit Flat, and Lady Flames sophomore Meghan Peterson came in second in Novice Equitation. Third-place finishers for Liberty included freshman John Hutchinson (Limit Fences), junior Melanie Dini (Introductory Equitation), and sophomore Allie Baker (Pre-Novice Equitation).
Liberty’s Western riding team, which last competed Feb. 12-13 at Virginia Tech, will next host an IHSA Region 4 show on March 5-6 at the Liberty Equestrian Center.
