Tryouts for most of the 40-plus distinct sports offered through Liberty University’s Club Sports department are scheduled for late August through mid-September, often following informational meetings that will provide more details for those interested in competing for those teams in the 2022-23 school year.

“We want to raise awareness to students about some of the sports on campus that they could try out for, and encourage them to pursue that,” said men’s and women’s beach volleyball and men’s indoor volleyball Head Coach Kaleb VanDePerre, who also serves as Club Sports’ assistant director of marketing and promotions. “There will be a lot of incoming freshmen who might be a good candidate for the men’s or women’s crew or disc golf teams that aren’t sure that they exist, so we want to get those kids plugged in.”

Liberty’s Division I, DII, and DIII men’s hockey teams will be the first teams to start tryouts on Friday, Aug. 19 at 3 p.m. at the LaHaye Ice Center (LIC). The Lady Flames’ DI and DII women’s hockey teams will follow suit with their first skate session Sunday, Aug. 21 — the eve of the first day of classes for the fall semester — from 8-9 p.m. at the LIC.

Men’s and women’s racquetball tryouts will begin on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center’s racquetball courts.

Beach volleyball will hold its tryouts at the East Campus Beach Courts (near the East Campus Field House and Liberty Field Hockey and Lacrosse Fields) starting Tuesday, Aug. 23, from 3-6 p.m. Men’s and women’s equestrian will follow with its first round of tryouts from 4-5 p.m. at the Liberty Mountain Equestrian Center. Then, from 6-9 p.m. that night at the Liberty Lacrosse Fields, the men’s ultimate team will begin tryouts.

Three teams will kick off tryouts on Thursday, Aug. 25 — triathlon from 5-7 p.m. in the Triathlon Studio located next to Hardee’s in Candlers Station; women’s wrestling at 6:30 p.m. at the Liberty Club Sports Complex; and men’s and women’s crew from 7-8 p.m. in the Club Sports Training Complex.

Rock climbing, which will hold tryouts Aug. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center’s rock wall, is one of the newer sports offered as a competitive Club Sports program.

Then on Friday, Aug. 26, the synchronized skating team will kick off the morning with its first round of tryouts in the LIC from 7:30-9:15 a.m. On Saturday, Aug. 27, women’s ultimate will begin tryouts from 10 a.m. to noon at the Liberty LMIC Fields.

Five teams will commence tryouts on Monday, Aug. 29 — men’s wrestling starting at 3:30 p.m. in the Liberty Club Spots Complex; men’s swimming from 5-7 p.m. in the Liberty Natatorium; men’s and women’s taekwondo from 5-7 p.m. in the Olympic Training Facility located in Candlers Station; disc golf from 6-8 p.m. on the Liberty Lacrosse Fields; and men’s volleyball from 3-5 p.m. in the LaHaye Multipurpose Center.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., the men’s and women’s rock climbing team will hold its first tryout at the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center’s rock climbing wall. Then, on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 6-7 p.m., the men’s and women’s ski & snowboard team will begin tryouts at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.

Also in September, men’s lacrosse will hold open tryouts on Sept. 6 from 3-6 p.m. at the Liberty Lacrosse Fields, before the women’s figure skating team holds its first session of tryouts on Sept. 18 from 1-4 p.m. in the LIC.

VanDePerre encourages prospective student-athletes to reach out via email or phone to the coach of the respective team, or to the Club Sports department, with any questions.
