Action Shooting Sports team reaps four national titles in Ala.
Liberty University’s Action Shooting team entered two four-shooter squads into three of the four disciplines of this past weekend’s Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Collegiate National Championships in Talladega, Ala., and finished first in all three events.
The Flames won the Tammy L. Mowry Rifle Cup, a traveling trophy for best overall rifle team.
“It was a wonderful weekend for the team, winning every category in which we entered and placing third with the second squad in one category, with several exceptional individual achievements,” Liberty Action Shooting Head Coach Bill Crawford said. “Our team went down and performed exceptionally well, beating out teams that did likewise.”
The various events are timed competitions with the fastest teams winning.
The Flames finished first out of seven Rimfire Rifle Iron Sights teams in 2 minutes, 45.52 seconds, seven Rimfire Rifle Optic Sights squads in 2:49.39, and seven Pistol Caliber Carbine (PCC) foursomes in 2:43.29. A second Liberty team also placed third in the Rimfire Rifle Iron Sights division in 3:00.73. The Flames entered one squad into the Rimfire Pistol Iron Sights event, which also took home first-place honors in 2:57.8.
“Last year, the pistol team placed second, but neither rifle team placed in the top five,” Crawford said. “We added PCC this year, and we were obviously very pleased to win it in our first year competing in a strong category.”
Individually, the Flames had the second- through fifth-place winners in the Rimfire Pistol Iron Sights category — sophomore Sam Verdoorn, senior Sam Stover, junior TJ McFarland, and sophomore Andersen Bennett. Sophomore Christian Morgan also placed second in the Rimfire Rifle Iron Sights division; McFarland was second in the Rimfire Rifle Optic Sights category; Verdoorn finished second in the Pistol Caliber Carbine men’s division, and senior Connelly Weems came in second in the female divisions of both the Pistol Caliber Carbine and Rimfire Rifle Optic Sights.
This coming weekend’s NRA Intercollegiate Club Rifle Championships at Fort Benning, Ga., were canceled and next week’s scheduled ACUI Shotgun National Championships in San Antonio, Texas, have been postponed until May at the earliest as precautionary measures in response to the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
