The women’s basketball team won five out of the six games they played over winter break. The Lady Flames played the Presbyterian College Lady Blue Hose Jan. 8 in a conference game. With help from sophomore Devon Brown’s 13 points, the Lady Flames beat the Lady Blue Hose 51-40.

Mkimbiaji is the Kinswhahili noun for “runner.” For instance, native Kenyan and Liberty senior cross country sensation Sam Chelanga is a mkimbiaji. For the second year in a row, Chelanga was named national cross country Athlete of the Year after winning NCAA championships in 2009 and 2010.

Every January, the summation of a season comes to its climax in the pitting of the BCS No. 1 team and the BCS No. 2 for the NCAA National Championship. After Saturday’s action, the top two teams in the country were decided and the BCS championship all but officially balloted.

The Liberty Flames track and field team hosts a meet each December in order to prepare for the official season that will take off in January. The purpose of the meet — which is not a scored meet — is purely diagnostic.

If the 2010-11 NFL season had to be summed up in one word it would almost certainly be “controversy.” Before the season was even under way, there were scandals brewing, and almost every week there was something to talk about that habitually had very little to do with the actual game of football.

In the afternoon sun of Conway, South Carolina, a tale of two offenses unfolded as Liberty dropped its first Big South game 31-45 to rival Coastal Carolina.

Saturday’s game was a must win for both teams. A win for Liberty would keep them in contention of the bottle-neck for the Big South championship. Likewise, a loss for Coastal would essentially eliminate them from playoff contention. Both teams had a banner to play for. Coastal capitalized, Liberty capsized.

As the minutes counted down and senior captain Karyl Bacon bumped, set, and spiked for the last time in the Vines Center as a Lady Flame, the Liberty Lady Flames volleyball team defeated UNC-Asheville, 3-2. “I would not have wanted to end the season any other way with any other team,” Bacon said. “These girls are awesome. They flew around. It was great to go out with a win.” It was an emotional game and the impact of Bacon completing her final regular season game hung bittersweet in the air.
