Ray Jones stumbled across a marked up degree completion plan for Liberty University. His wife, Jill, who died in a car crash months earlier, had already filled in the courses he completed at other colleges. “Even from beyond, she is still telling me what to do,” Jones said with a smile. After losing his wife and son, Nicholas, in a car crash last August, Jones left his construction job and enrolled in Liberty’s online program with sights set on teaching.

Piano melodies filled the air as students chatted around a chocolate fountain. Students decorated in suits and dresses looked around at their peers, friends and parents who had come to join them in a night to remember. Liberty University’s DeMoss Grand Lobby was filled Saturday, April 16 for an event commemorating the work of dedicated Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) Honors Society students who will be graduating in a few weeks.

The room was full of attentive listeners as Jim Dudley sat down to the piano late Thursday evening. Dudley makes a regular appearance behind the microphone and piano in Jimmy’s On The James, a southern American bistro. Jimmy’s On The James, named after owner, Jim Dudley, is an upscale restaurant downtown on Commerce Street.

Men in ties and buttoned suits accompanied flawlessly styled women as the elevator attendants opened doors to the third floor event. Cameras flashed on a red carpet which sprawled out in front of a large black and white backdrop. The 16th Annual Achievement Awards were underway at the Williams Stadium Club Pavilion, Saturday, April 9, and everyone was a star.

Senior Jenna Sailsbury has spent much of her life in and out of hospitals. At the age of 11, she was diagnosed a few days after Christmas in 1998 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), with a Philadelphia positive chromosome. “I had been sick with strep throat at two different times,” Jenna said. “After an enlarged spleen and lots of blood tests, I was diagnosed with the leukemia.”

Students and visitors packed into the Vines Center Friday night for an evening of rock and worship with bands downhere and Rush of Fools. Rush of Fools opened the evening with their signature contemporary Christian style, warming up the crowd for the headlining act, the Juno-award winning Canadian band downhere.

Ann Major carefully mixes chocolate-dipped pineapple hearts with plump strawberries, grapes and thick orange slices into a tasty bouquet. “It’s something different,” Major, who manages Edible Arrangements in Wyndhurst, said. “It makes fruit enjoyable.”

Growth and renovation have continued to shape Liberty University as its staff and students celebrate the 40th anniversary of its creation. Along with numerous upgrades in academic and athletic buildings around campus, Liberty’s Campus East resident buildings will be given a new numbering system in the fall of 2011 that will improve campus directions and make way for future expansion.

Xtreme Impact (XI) works to combine youth ministry and missions. This ministry is fully devoted to sending high school students from all over the country into other parts of the world on mission trips where they are able to impact lives regardless of their age. XI is looking for two to four Liberty University students to serve as small group leaders on some of their mission trips taking place this summer July 9-30.
