How To Plan A Super Bowl Party On A Budget

The Super Bowl is a time for family, friends and fans to gather, watch good sports and spend quality time together. While the game itself leaves fans clinging to the edge of their seats, a good watch party elevates the experience to new heights. Typically, these parties include football-themed foods, such as wings or pizza, sodas and team-themed decorations.

According to the AP, the projected cost for a Super Bowl party in 2025 for 10 people will be around $140. However, being on a student budget means that expectations must be curved. So how can one throw a great Super Bowl party without breaking the bank?

First, let’s start with what food to get. Some cheap and simple snack foods to buy could include chips and dip, soda and cookies.

“For the meal, I would plan something like walking tacos. This is a simple meal that could feed a lot of people,” Maddie Shaw, senior and Event Planning Society (EPS) treasurer, said.

The Reber-Thomas Dining Hall also offers a variety of game-day food options that students can utilize meal swipes for to get food and bring it back to their respective hosting areas.

For students on a low budget, decorating does not need to be an extravagant expenditure. Cheap decorations can often be found at Walmart or Amazon. However, shopping at the Dollar Tree will guarantee that nothing costs more than $1.25.

Since Super Bowl party decorations are not likely to be used repeatedly, Dollar Tree may be the most cost-effective option.

“I love to find decor on a budget at the dollar store. They have a lot of options of different serving bowls, cups, utensils, napkins and plates that are affordable,” said senior Emma Godlewski, public relations manager for EPS.

Splitting up costs with your roommates or guests is also a good way to stay on a budget.

“My best tip to throwing a good party on a budget is to host an event where you and all of your friends bring something to contribute. This divides up the expenses and makes it very affordable for everyone,” Godlewski said.

Once decorations are purchased, it is time to set everything up.  Students can utilize their common room space as a means to hang out as most dorms on campus already have TVs to watch the game. By purchasing a tablecloth, a few plates and utensils to set out on the tables, you have already achieved a mini-party setup to prepare for game time.

If a student chooses to host a party in their dorm room, that is still achievable. You can set up the food and drinks on your desk.

“Opening up your bed as a seating option and placing the TV in a location that the most angles could see it from helps,” said Olivia Eller, junior and secretary of EPS.

Throwing a good Super Bowl party does not have to exhaust financial resources to still be enjoyable for everyone.
