Liberty offers lifeguarding jobs to students

Liberty University offers countless on-campus jobs for students to replenish their summer job income during the fall and spring semesters. For those who miss the summer days and love warm weather near the water, there is an on-campus job for them: lifeguarding at the swimming facilities on campus.

The LaHaye Recreation and Fitness Center is home to one of Liberty’s aquatic centers, complete with a pool and hot tub.

The aquatics center is one of the many places where students at Liberty University can seek an enriching and fun job experience. The LaHaye Campus Recreation Aquatics staff is ready, willing and able to provide high-level instruction and training to any student. With a team full of certified instructors offering a variety of lessons and certification courses, anyone can get the opportunity to meet their swimming goals.

One member of the LaHaye Campus Recreation Aquatics staff is aquatics manager Josephine Cox. At 16, Cox got certified to be a lifeguard and was later hired at her local YMCA. She is now going into her fifth year of lifeguarding.

“Ever since I was little, I loved swimming and being in the water,” Cox said.  “I was on a swim team from about the age of 8… Being on a swim team and growing up constantly around the water was just a given that I should be a lifeguard.”

Lifeguarding at LaHaye requires certain certifications to ensure that all swimmers are safe. All of the certifications that Cox and every other certified lifeguard on the aquatics staff had to obtain includes an in-water pre-test, (which consists of a long-distance swim), submerged object retrieval, treading water within a specific time frame and an in-class portion and an in-water portion of the certification course where applicants learn rescues, CPR and first-aid information.
