Obituary: Carl Diemer, First LU Tennis Coach, Passes At 83

The Flame’s first men’s tennis coach and former School of Divinity Professor Carl Diemer passed away March 28 at 83 years old.

In 1973, Dr. Jerry Falwell called Diemer to serve as one of four founding faculty members of the Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary, which is now the School of Divinity, where he served until he retired in 2018.

According to a Liberty News article, he held various leadership roles within the seminary in addition to teaching in the seminary school.

While teaching at Liberty, he also helped start the men’s tennis team in 1987 and coached until 1997. His passion for tennis started young. He played tennis and even competed professionally. Additionally, he pastored a number of churches throughout his life, including the Leesville Road Baptist Church in Evington.

“He was an outstanding Christian, a dedicated churchman and was a weekend pastor for over 10 different churches, while teaching at Liberty,” Liberty University co-founder Dr. Elmer Towns said.

He was married to the late Carolyn Diemer. The two of them spent summers involved in missions work, founding the nonprofit organization Books without Borders and getting translated copies of “What the Bible Teaches about Life After Death” printed and distributed in Russia and the Middle East.
