Liberty welcomes new cheesestake vendor to the Tilley Center
South Street Cheesesteaks, the newest on-campus dining option, recently opened in the Tilley Student Center on the first day of classes, Aug. 24.
The LU dining location replaced the Asian style restaurant, Umai, which lasted through the 2019-20 school year. Duane “Duke” Davis, District Manager of Sodexo, said that because of its similarity to Star Ginger, another Asian style restaurant on campus, he wanted to implement something different from the other dining options and select a food choice students would enjoy.
“Cheesesteaks always are a big hit at Mongolian Grill in the Rot, so the managers at the Tilley suggested we give it a try at the Umai location,” Davis said. “We ran a trial and it went over very well so we decided to make it a permanent change.”
South Street is food truck-themed, which pulls the whole Philly cheesesteak vibe together. A nearby banner reads, “There is no wrong way to order,” encouraging students to be creative in ordering and to completely indulge in what South Street has to offer.
South Street provides students with a variety of ways to enjoy a cheesesteak, including a large selection of toppings. Meal plan swipes also come with fries and a drink. The eatery provides breakfast from 7:30-9 a.m. and lunch and dinner from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday. For the breakfast option, South Street offers a buffet including, eggs, sausage, and fruit.
On a banner near the South Street restaurant a QR code leads students to a survey where they can record their experience with the restaurant .
“Based on early results, it looks like we hit a home run here,” Davis said.
So far, students seem pleased with this new dining location.
“The food was great! Service is fast and amazing,” LU junior Drake Butler said.
“It was fast, and they tasted like authentic Philly Cheesesteak subs and they have a wide selection,” LU junior Dylan Shifflett said.
