Lynchburg to finish Phase III of the Fifth Street Corridor Utility & Streetscape Project

Before Main Street Lynchburg receives upgrades, Lynchburg Water Resources must complete Phase III of the Fifth Street Corridor Utility & Streetscape Project, which spans Jackson Street to Taylor Street.

The third segment of the project, which began in April 2018, is upgrading utilities and streetscape elements.

“The Fifth Street project is very similar to what we’re doing downtown,” Jes Gearing, Lynchburg Water Resources’ public information officer, said. “We’re going through and finishing up the utility portion of that project, which will span from Jackson Street to Taylor Street and Park Avenue as well, where we will be replacing the old pipeline (that is) over 120 years old.”

The project has been in the works since 2009 with the goal of “encouraging a thriving business center in this historically significant area,” according to the project’s web page. The first two phases of the project introduced improvements from Main Street to Jackson Street, including the Federal Street roundabout.

Since the project began, 5th Street has welcomed many new businesses, such as 5th Street Grind (a coffee shop), Daughters and Sons Pizza, BitterSweet Clothing & Accessories, and Grey’s, an American restaurant.
