Outdoor Recreations Prepares for Nauture-filled Spring Semester

From caving trips to an outdoor festival, Outdoor Recreations and Student Activities have events planned throughout the spring semester for students willing to brave winter weather and those who would rather stay inside.

“We always think of spring semester being lighter, but it never really is,” Director of Outdoor Recreation Mike Ellsworth said.  “Even though it’s cold, that doesn’t slow us down.”

  • Kicking off the spring semester on Feb. 3 is the Arctic 5K Camp Hydaway, providing students with cabin fever an opportunity to get out and run.
  • On Feb. 1 and 10 Outdoor Recreations is taking interested students on skiing trips to Wintergreen Ski Resort in Wintergreen, VA.
  • Outdoor Recreations is taking students on its first-ever winter caving trip on Feb. 17 to a cave in Blacksburg, VA.
  • The Outdoor RecFest on March 9-10 features musicians at the LaHaye Event Space, an expo with local businesses, a fly fishing casting competition and nature painting and photography workshops.
  • Another part of the Outdoor RecFest is the King of the Mountain Trail Race on March 10. The King of the Mountain is a mile-long race starting at Snowflex in which the first half-mile is downhill and the second half-mile is uphill.
  • Outdoor Recreations is also hosting a Wilderness First Responders Course on March 17, which will provide attendees with the tools to make medical decisions in the wilderness.
