The Lady Flames wowed the crowd on senior night Friday at home against Presbyterian College and edged out a 1-0 victory.

Tied 0-0 going into the last five minutes of the game senior Maria Owen scored the goal (4) that put the Lady Flames up and sealed the deal.

“It was a great feeling to score the winning goal especially on senior night,” Owen said.” The beginning was a little shaky starting all of the seniors in the line up, but we adjusted.”

The Lady Flames had good looks in the first and second halves but couldn’t capitalize until the end of the game. Coach Jessica Hain was proud of their fight throughout the entire game.

“It was a special night because of senior night ,and I know the girls were so excited to play together,” Hain said. “We always talk about being a family with our team and standing together and playing unified which was displayed tonight.”

The Lady Flames continued to attack despite missing opportunites to score.

“We persevered tonight and had to push through to get that goal,” Owen said. “The attack was perfect on the goal.”

The No. 6 Lady Flames will begin play in the Big south Tournament on Thursday Nov. 4 against rival Coastal Carolina.

“How we are playing right now is where we have wanted to be at all year,” Hain said. “We can continue to improve but I think we still have room for our best game.”

The Lady Flames are familiar Coastal’s squad. Earlier this season, Coastal won 1-0.

“After last year going into the tournament ranked #1 we had the target on our backs,” Owen said. “Having that target off our backs will be a relief this year.”

The Lady Flames have all the potential to not only do well but also win the Big South Tournament in Radford this week. Confidence is high right now.

“We have the ability to go all the way”, Owen said. “(Coastal is) not going to be ready for the 6th ranked team and I know we can win.”
