Eligibility for Social Security

In the U.S. for at least 10 days
Enrolled full-time in classes
Have a confirmed job offer. The job must begin within 30 days of applying for a Social Security Number.

Social Security Numbers are issued for employment purposes only.

After you have a job offer confirmed, go to the Human Resources Office at Green Hall to obtain a Social Security application letter. This letter must be signed by your employer and by a Human Resources Office staff member.
After you have obtained your letter from Human Resources go to the International Student Center to get a signed letter from your International Student Advisor.

Bring the following items to the Social Security Office:

Passport
Form I-20
Form I-94
Liberty Student ID (Flames Pass) Card
Birth Certificate (This is required if your passport is less than a year old.)
Letter verifying the job offer, signed by both the employer and the Human Resources Office
Letter from the International Student Center signed by the Designated School Official
Proof of residency in Lynchburg. This could be a piece of mail that has been sent to you at your current address (Liberty or local).
- Make sure you use a complete address when you apply, with a box# or apartment#.
  - Example: Sue Smith, 1971 University Blvd #12345, Lynchburg, VA 24506.
- You can use a bank statement, cell phone bill, or a transcript that lists your local or Liberty address. Personal letters, computer printouts, or “junk mail” will not be accepted.
