Liberty places six wrestlers at Messiah Open tournament
February 7, 2015 | Grantham, Pa.
Saving its starters for Thursday's dual match at Ferrum College, Liberty University's wrestling team entered several of its reserves in Saturday's 13-team Messiah Open in Grantham, Pa.
That's the same venue where the Flames opened their season on Nov. 1, finishing runner-up at the Messiah Invitational.
Liberty senior Josh Sturgill experienced the most success on Saturday, going 3-1 to place second in the 165-pound bracket. He dropped a 6-1 decision to Maryland's Inan Sikel in the championship final.
Flames freshman David Abbadusky also went 3-1, but settled for sixth place at 165 after getting hurt in his semifinal match and having to take an injury default in the fifth-place bout while freshman Cody Richmond benefited from his opponent's injury default to finish seventh in that weight class.
At 197 pounds, Flames sophomore Matt Reynolds was pinned by UMBC's Eldar Muradov 1 minute, 34 seconds into their third-place bout to finish fourth with a 3-2 record.
Sophomore Patrick Good placed sixth at 174 pounds, losing a 7-1 decision to SUNY Cortland's Josh Reed in the fifth-place final, and junior Alex Cox went 2-2 to finish seventh at 184, pinning Kevin Thomas of Thaddeus Stevens College in his last bout.
