Flames build for future, take third at Builders Invitational  test test test test

Competing with its second squad, Liberty University's wrestling team placed third in Saturday's Ship Builders Invitational, hosted by the Apprentice School at Woodside High School in Newport News, Va.

The Flames had two individual champions and three third-place finishers to help rack up 92.5 points in the 13-team tournament. West Virginia Tech was the overall team champion, dethroning Ferrum, the runner-up.

Liberty senior Josh Sanders finished first at 149 pounds, pinning James Madison University's Steven Cotnoir in 1 minute, 41 seconds in the semifinals and Jared Flynn 2:51 into the championship match.

Senior Josh Sanders and freshman Cody Richmond won their weight classes to help the Flames finish third.

Freshman 165-pound wrestler Cody Richmond won his weight class, defeating Dick Panchak of West Virginia Tech by 18-7 major decision in the semifinals and Josh Alston of Ferrum in the final, 8-4 in overtime, scoring a takedown and a nearfall in the extra period.

Another Flames freshman, 141-pounder Jonah Swinson, placed third. He lost to West Virginia Tech's Rob McNeil, 8-4 in the semifinals before bouncing back to decision Ty Wattkins of host Apprentice School, 6-3 in the consolation final.

Sophomore Charlie Hancock came in third at 235, decking Tim Sudyan of Penn State-DuBois in 2:51 of the third-place final.

At heavyweight, Scott Pendall also finished third, pinning sophomore teammate Thomas Bartholomew in the consolation semifinal and Apprentice's Gino Saunders in 3:26 in the third-place final.

Bartholomew lost his fifth-place bout to Penn State-DuBois' Andrew Bigley by pin in 2:24 to settle for sixth place.

Junior Alex Cox took fifth at 184 pounds, decisioning VMI's Caleb Prather, 8-3.

Liberty will travel to the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) National Duals, Friday and Saturday in Dalton, Ga. The Flames have finished first, second, and third, respectively in the past three NCWA National Duals.
