Liberty University's men's lacrosse program hosted its seventh annual Flames Futures Camp this past week at the Liberty Lacrosse Fields, offering area youth and prospective collegiate players an opportunity to develop and showcase their skills through daily drills and scrimmages.

COVID-19 restrictions forced organizers to restructure this year's event, ending a six-year trend of increased numbers, but increasing the amount of individual instruction and attention each player received.

"We went from an overnight camp model to a day camp model … but at the end of the day, it was still great," Flames Head Coach Kyle McQuillan said. "It was still lacrosse and gave the opportunity for the kids to get out and start playing the game again after weeks and months of not being able to do a whole lot of anything."

He will be excited to return to the previous camp format and increasing on-and off-field activities in the future.

"We're going to continue to do things to capitalize on the resources we have here," McQuillan said. "We've got some great resources … some great fields and great facilities. We look forward to getting kids on campus and being able to utilize those and trying to do some different things."

Assistant Coach Mike Zumpano said the camp is as valuable for the coaching staff to evaluate up-and-coming talent as it is for the players themselves to sharpen their techniques and improve their games.

"The recruiting aspect of camp is important for us to be able to bring in players and (show them) around campus," he said. "That is a priority and the biggest recruiting tool that we have, not only seeing a player play in person, but getting to know them, their personality and how they will fit into the culture we are creating. From a spiritual standpoint, we give people a sense that we're about something bigger, which is important to our culture as well."
