DI Flames selected as unanimous preseason ESCHL favorites
September 20, 2019 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's ACHA Division I men's hockey team, the two-time-defending Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) regular-season champion, is the undisputed favorite to extend its reign atop the conference standings after receiving all six first-place votes for 36 points in the ESCHL Preseason Coaches Poll, released on Friday.
The Flames, who went 17-2-3 in ESCHL play last season, will open conference competition with a series at Rhode Island on Oct. 11-12. Then, over Homecoming Weekend on Oct. 18-19, Liberty will host Syracuse in a rematch of the March 17 ESCHL Tournament championship game, a 3-2 double-overtime setback that kept it from winning a third consecutive title.
The Orange received 21 points in the preseason rankings to finish behind second-place Stony Brook (30), followed by Delaware (16), Rhode Island (15), and New York University (8).
After traveling to Adrian College, ranked fifth in the ACHA DI Preseason Coaches Poll, the eighth-ranked Flames will host 12th-ranked Stony Brook on Nov. 1-2.
The Flames open their 2019-20 season tonight at 7 against Duquesne University at the LaHaye Ice Center, webcast live by the Liberty Flames Sports Network (LFSN) with coverage carried on ESPN+.
