Rifle team wins sectionals at UVA, qualifies for NRA nationals

Competing in its first official event in program history, Liberty University's rifle team defeated host Virginia to capture the NRA Intercollegiate Rifle Sectional Championships, Saturday at the Rivanna Rifle & Pistol Club in Charlottesville, Va.
All seven of the Flames and Lady Flames competitors qualified for the March 22-24 NRA national Intercollegiate Club Rifle championships in Fort Benning, Ga. Flames freshman co-captain Mitchell Feaga, who won the air rifle and small bore events with scores of 584 and 564, respectively, also qualified to compete at the April 5-12 Junior Olympic Championships at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The small bore rifle competitors shot at targets from 50 feet away and the air rifle contestants fired from 10 meters. The Flames' small bore team accumulated a combined score of 2,005 while the air rifle team totaled 2,188. Liberty junior captain Susie Krupp placed second to Feaga in both events with respective scores of 522 and 546.
Freshmen Katherine Gray (469) and Caisey Duran (450) also qualified to compete at Fort Benning in the small bore event while Gray (529), Duran (523), Alec Tennepohl (529), senior Jonathan Deene (514), and Rachel Brinkley (510) also advanced in the air rifle event.
Liberty rifle coaches Marlene and Kevin Gray accompanied the team to the sectional competition and plan to travel to Georgia with the team for nationals.
The Flames and Lady Flames will also be sending 10 members of their shotgun team to the Feb. 23-24 Southeastern Regionals in Fort Benning, Ga., a qualifier for the March 25-30 ACUI Collegiate Clay National Championships in San Antonio, Texas.
Head Coach Dave Hartman is in the final phase of selecting a team of four or eight pistol and rifle shooters who will compose Liberty's Action Shooting team and travel to Talladega, Ala., to compete in the March 8-10 Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Intercollegiate National Championships.
