LaHaye Rec & Fitness Center to hold indoor triathlon Jan. 20
January 11, 2019 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's men's and women's triathlon teams will host a USA Tri 60 indoor sprint triathlon on Sunday, Jan. 20, in the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center, open to Liberty students and the general public.
The first event of its kind on Liberty's campus will be a 60-minute timed race featuring staggered starts beginning at 7 a.m. and running continuously until all the contestants have started. The first phase will be a 10-minute swim in the LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center's 25-yard pool followed by a 30-minute stage on a spinning bike and a 20-minute run on the track overlooking the basketball courts. There will be 15 minutes of transition time between the race's three phases and place-winners will be determined by total laps swum and run and miles logged on the stationary bike.
There will also be a 7-14-year-old competition, which will include an abbreviated five-minute swim, 15-minute cycling stage, and 20-minute run/jog/walk.
Members of the Flames and Lady Flames will compete in the 15-and-over category of the race and several other Club Sports student-athletes will volunteer to monitor the course for both races.
"The whole idea is to promote the sport throughout the community and encourage people to come out and try a triathlon for the first time," said USA Triathlon-certified race director Todd Gollnick, husband of Liberty first-year triathlon Head Coach Heather Gollnick.
Each participant will receive a draw-string backpack and a finisher T-shirt and medal, with the top three male and female finishers also earning awards.
Registration is available online on IMathlete.com, which will also post results.
