DII Flames settle for tie with Rowan before routing Virginia
November 4, 2018 | Lynchburg, Va.
Senior right wing Matthew Perri scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period to allow Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team to salvage a 2-2 tie with Rowan, Saturday afternoon at the LaHaye Ice Center.
After a scoreless five-minute overtime period, Perri added the deciding score in the shootout, which only counts in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey (MACH) standings.
"He was one of the guys that stepped up and had a really big game on Saturday," Flames Head Coach Ben Hughes said.
Liberty (7-3-1), which was coming off a 4-1 and 6-2 home sweep of Rider on Oct. 26 and 27, capped the weekend with a 6-1 victory over visiting Virginia on Sunday afternoon.
Against Rowan, sophomore forward Blake Flanders started the scoring 5:32 into the first period, putting away an assist from freshman forward Devin Melice. But the Profs' Ryan Conlin netted the game-tying goal with 45 seconds left in the first period and the go-ahead score 6:32 into the second.
Liberty outshot Rowan by a 47-32 count and sophomore goalie Adam Partridge made 30 saves.
"Adam kept us in it the whole time," Hughes said. "We outshot them by a lot, but their goalie played well and we just had a hard time scoring on him."
The Flames will find out where they are ranked in the Southeast Region when the first ACHA Division II computer rankings are released on Wednesday.
Against Virginia, the Flames held a 35-27 shot advantage. Freshman left wing Cullen Briggs started the scoring 10:49 into the first period before freshman forward Darren Carter tipped in a second goal with Liberty on the power play 43 seconds into the second.
Aaron Partridge extended the lead to 3-0 just over five minutes later before fellow freshman forward Austin Barlass scored and Virginia capped the second-period scoring. Flames junior forward Drew Crilly and senior defenseman Jackson Roy completed the scoring with back-to-back goals in the final four minutes of the third period. Liberty outshot UVA, 48-33, and Adam Partridge made 32 saves between the pipes.
Liberty will travel to New Jersey on Saturday for a rematch with Rowan before traveling to face Delaware on Sunday for consecutive contests against MACH North Division opponents.
