DII Flames begin postseason by defending MACH title
February 16, 2018 | Rowan, N.J.
As the top seed in the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Hockey (MACH) South Division, Liberty University's ACHA Division II men's hockey team, the reigning champion, soundly defeated fourth-seeded Stevenson University, 14-0, in Friday's first round matchup at Rowan (N.J.) University.
With the win, the Flames advanced to Saturday's MACH South final, set for 4 p.m. against No. 2-seeded Maryland, a 3-0 winner over No. 3 Delaware. The South winner will play the North Division champion, most likely top-seeded Penn State, in Sunday's 12:15 p.m. championship game.
Before the tournament, Liberty senior forward Paul Lamoureux was named to the MACH's first team. He scored 24 goals and distributing 25 assists in the regular season, capped by a two-goal performance in the Flames' 5-3 victory over Virginia Tech last Saturday in Roanoke that clinched the best-of-three Battle of the Blue Ridge.
On Wednesday, the Flames found out on an ACHA DII Regional Reveal Show, hosted by LFSN sports anchor Rett McGibbon, that they will be seeded third in the Southeast Region Tournament, set for next Friday through Sunday, Feb. 23-25, at the LaHaye Ice Center. Cincinnati, Toledo, Miami, Rowan, and Delaware are locked into the tournament's fourth through eighth seeds, respectively.
Top-ranked Penn State and No. 2 Florida Gulf Coast received the region's two autobids to the March 9-13 ACHA DII National Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Next Saturday at noon — in the first or two rounds of single-elimination competition to determine which two teams advance to nationals — Liberty will take on the lowest-seeded remaining team in the tournament following Friday's play-in games. With a win, the Flames would play for a fifth consecutive nationals berth in Sunday's noon second-round contest. All eight games of that tournament will be webcast live by LFSN and picked up by the Big South Network.
