Lady Flames DII hockey team targeting first postseason berth
January 8, 2018 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's ACHA Division II women's hockey team outscored opponents 97-21 and went 6-2 in the fall semester, putting the Lady Flames in excellent position to qualify for the College Hockey East tournament and ACHA DII National Championships for the first time in team history as the second-ranked team in the East Region.
"It's exciting," Lady Flames Assistant Coach Rena Leone said. "(Head Coach) Sara Niemi and I have been together playing and, now, coaching and for this to be the first year that our DII women's team has the opportunity to possibly go to nationals, we're ecstatic. But we want to focus game-by-game, not take anything for granted, and we know we have a lot of hard work to do because if we get there, we want to make sure we make a presence there."
In the midst of a six-week Christmas break, Liberty will take a five-game winning streak into its spring semester opener at the Naval Academy on Jan. 26 in a rematch against the team it last lost to on Nov. 4 at the LaHaye Ice Center. In that series, the Lady Flames rebounded from the 4-2 setback with a 6-5 overtime triumph on Nov. 5.
