White, Shumate battling for amateur title in BRAWL series

With one event remaining in the Blue Ridge Area Winter League (BRAWL) Series XIII, set for Feb. 25 on a private farm course in Bedford County, Liberty University senior Josh White holds a 25-point lead (228-203) on sophomore teammate Ryan Shumate on the amateur leaderboard.

They are followed by graduate Devin Swartz (199), who sits in third place in the season standings after seven of eight events. Hunter Thomas (143) is in sixth place followed by fellow sophomore Zach Biscardi (eighth, 128) and freshman Christian Wilbourn (10th, 95).

This past weekend, at event No. 7 in Rocky Mount, Va., Shumate (56-64-120) finished runner-up to White (56-62-118) by two throws in the advanced category followed by Thomas (third, 56-70-126) and Swartz (fifth, 56-73-129).

Biscardi, meanwhile, won the intermediate division with rounds of 62 and 65 for a 127 total, followed by Wilbourn (fourth, 68-73-141).

At the Feb. 4 tournament at Big Branch Farm in Bedford, Shumate (56-50-106), Swartz (55-52-107), Thomas (61-52-113), and White (58-55-113) took the top four spots while senior John Younce (58-67-125) placed ninth. The Flames also had four top-10 finishers in the intermediate division — Biscardi (second, 61-60-121), freshman Hunter Hite (third, 59-63-122), Wilborn (fourth, 66-59-125), and freshman Jesse Miller (10th, 67-65-132).

Former Lady Flame Hannah Croke won the Amateur Ladies event with rounds of 67-68-135.

On Jan. 21 at the Greenfield Park course in Roanoke, Shumate (56-64-120) finished third in the advanced totals, five throws out of first, followed by White (fifth, 64-59-123) and Swartz (sixth, 61-63-124). Among intermediate players, Biscardi (62-67-129) tied for fifth and Miller (67-63-130) was eighth.

The week before at the Walnut Creek event near Charlottesville, Shumate (51-49-100) tied for first in the advanced competition and won on the first hole of a playoff with James Cady by deucing the hole for a birdie. Swartz (49-52-101) placed third followed by White (sixth, 55-49-104), Younce (11th, 56-52-108), and Thomas (14th, 54-55-109). In the intermediate division, Wilborn (53-59-112) and Biscardi (55-57-112) tied for fourth followed by Hite (eighth, 61-54-115) and sophomore Nathan Steinbarger (12th, 64-58 122).

After concluding BRAWL Series play, the Flames are considering traveling to Clemson, S.C., over Spring Break in mid-March in preparation for the April 12-15 National Collegiate Disc Golf  Championships in North Augusta, Ga. Liberty qualified for that event based on its best-ever seventh-place Championship Flight showing at last year's event.
