DI Flames have 23 home dates on 2016-17 hockey schedule
March 25, 2016 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's ACHA Division I men's hockey team's 2016-17 schedule doesn't get any easier now that the Flames have joined the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL).
"We always want to make sure that we have competitive games for our guys," Flames Head Coach Kirk Handy said. "We still get opportunities to play games against teams who are not in the conference. It'll be a good opportunity for us to still play our other rivals who we've developed relationships with."
Liberty will play 20 games against ESCHL opponents Delaware, Stony Brook, Rutgers, Rhode Island (host of the ESCHL playoffs), and West Chester (Pa.), host of the 2016 ACHA DII and 2017 ACHA DI National Championships. Liberty will play another 18 games out of conference, including against rivals Ohio, Oakland (Mich.), and Davenport in the fifth annual best-of-three Blue & Gray Cup.
The Flames will also face teams such as Alabama for home and away series, Sept. 30-Oct. 1 and Jan. 13-14 respectively.
"I'm looking forward to it," Handy said. "We've got some exciting opportunities with our schedule to see some good home games, for our fans to see different teams come in to play."
The Flames will play 23 home games, including 13 of their first 15, at the renovated LaHaye Ice Center — starting with a Sept. 16 season-opener against the Richmond Generals Junior "A" team — and another 15 games on the road.
Liberty will open ACHA and ESCHL play Sept. 23-24 at home against West Chester. The Sept. 30 contest against Alabama will be the Flames' second "Midnight Mayhem" event for men's hockey after they defeated Delaware on Nov. 13, 2015, in the first.
Season tickets will go on sale on Aug. 1.
