Varsity Club teams with Alumni Relations for tailgate events
July 30, 2015 | Lynchburg, Va.
Liberty University's Varsity Club, a student-athlete alumni organization launched last year, will join forces with the Alumni Relations office and Student Activities to heighten the experience of several tailgate events this school year.
"The Alumni Relations department has a longstanding history and tradition of tailgating in the front of the football stadium on game days," said Tyler Falwell, director of Alumni Relations. "We look forward to working closer with Varsity Club for the upcoming year. Any time we have an opportunity to partner with an alumni group or another student organization, it adds excitement and a unique perspective and brings new ideas and new energy to the event."
The tailgates will be set up outside the Hancock Welcome Center, across the street from Williams Stadium, two hours before kickoff for Flames Football home games this fall. Then in the spring semester, others will take place before a few ACHA Division I men's hockey games in the parking lot outside the expanded LaHaye Ice Center.
"We want people to show up and have a place to connect before games," said Jake Hannon, director of the Varsity Club. "We want to provide more recognition for former Liberty athletes. They're a specific subset of the overall alumni population who we want to reach out to and make them feel that they're always welcome and loved on when they come on campus."
Alumni Relations will provide food and door prizes as well as a TV set up for watching highlights from other football action around the country prior to kickoff. Visiting Varsity Club members, and new members who sign up, will be entered into drawings to win Liberty Flames apparel.
"There should be lots of activity there," Hannon said. "There will be inflatable tents, kids games, and a football toss competition, which will be a fun feature."
"With all of our tents and entertainment and activities, you will not miss us at our tailgates," Falwell added.
The kickoff tailgate event will take place before the 7 p.m. season opener on Sept. 5 against Delaware State with future tailgates scheduled before home games against Montana at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 (Parents Weekend and Athletics Hall of Fame induction weekend), Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 (Homecoming weekend), Presbyterian at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 7 (Military Appreciation Day), and rival Coastal Carolina at 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 21.
