Wrestlers win fifth-place rematch vs. Averett at Virginia Duals
January 11, 2020 | Hampton, Va.
Liberty University's men's wrestling team ended competition in this weekend's 40th annual Virginia Duals the same way it started it on Friday morning, with a come-from-behind victory over NCAA Division III Averett University — this time in the fifth-place match of the American College Division on Saturday night at Hampton Coliseum.
Between those two victories, the Flames (6-2) sustained their first two dual match defeats of the season, digging themselves into deep deficits before falling to defending tournament champion Kutztown (Pa.), 32-8, and fellow NCAA Division II program Alderson Broaddus (W.Va.), 25-18.
Already forfeiting at the 133-pound weight class, Liberty lost its 125-pounder, freshman Tristan Walls, to an ankle injury in the loss to Kutztown, so it started each match out of a 12-0 hole.
"Alderson Broaddus was a winnable match, we just didn't wrestle well at all," Flames Head Coach Jesse Castro said. "There is a lot of room for improvement. The upside of it is the guys wrestled with a lot of heart. They didn't lose matches for a lack of effort, but due to mistakes, both positional and technical, and unforced errors."
Senior 174-pounder Cody Richmond and freshman 197-pounder Blake Barrick were Liberty's only winners against Kutztown before junior Chad Cantrell started a rally from a 19-0 deficit against Alderson Broaddus with a 4-2 win over Dalton Pearl at 157 pounds and senior Joe Scott earned a technical fall over Derek Schmidt at 165. But Richmond and 184-pound senior Sam Karel lost back-to-back two-point decisions before senior 197-pounder Austin Amos and junior heavyweight Jeffrey Allen closed out the match with wins.
The Flames erased a 15-0 Averett advantage in the fifth-place final rematch on the strength of seven consecutive triumphs, starting with 149-pound senior Michael Gowan's 12-3 major decision of Caleb Harmon. Cantrell, Scott, 174-pound senior Andrew Burgette, Karel, Amos, and senior heavyweight David Smith closed out the match with victories.
Liberty will host a tri-match with NCAA DIII Southern Virginia University and NAIA West Virginia Tech next Saturday at noon in the LaHaye Multipurpose Center before sending a select squad of wrestlers to Sunday's Shipbuilder Invitational, hosted by NCWA rival The Apprentice School, which placed seventh at the Virginia Duals.
