Liberty University's taekwondo team held two of its semiannual women's self-defense seminars on Aug. 20 and 22 to kick off a sixth consecutive school year of the presentations at its temporary practice facility in River Ridge Mall.

The clinics were offered under the supervision of Head Coach Tom Childress with assistance from former Lady Flames competitor and first-year Assistant Coach Brittany Harris.

"We actually had an amazing turnout," Harris said. "Our self-defense seminar is a great opportunity for women to learn how to defend themselves, especially on a college campus."

"The idea is to give young ladies tools that they can use to protect themselves in the event that an assault occurs … very basic information on how to get away from an attacker," Childress added. "We teach some things that are pretty brutal in nature, but it's for real life ... (to use when) somebody's really trying to harm you. We would love to make it a mandatory thing for everybody to have to go through."

Senior Jackie Baumann said one in five girls will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

"It's a really sad statistic, and just knowing a little bit of basics of how to defend yourself is important," she said.

"You don't think about it, but it can happen literally anywhere, especially to college girls, so we really want to raise that awareness and bring that statistic down," Harris added. "That's why we do these seminars. You don't need a black belt to defend yourself. If you come to our classes, we show you simple steps that anybody can do."
