Twelve members of Liberty University's second-year shooting sports team will travel to San Antonio on Saturday to compete in the ACUI Collegiate Shotgun National Championships, set for Monday through Friday at the National Shooting Complex.

Last year, eight Flames and Lady Flames combined for a second-place team finish in All-American Division 4. This year, they will move up two levels to compete in Division 2.

"It's going to be a very, very tough road, but I think we can come out, work our best, and we can shine," Liberty Head Coach Dave Hartman said. "They've got their work cut out for them and they know what scores they have to post. They're practicing and they are eager to show the world what they can do."

On Monday and Tuesday, International Shooting Organization (ISO) will hold its International Shootout, with Lady Flames sophomores Chloe Sterner and Liz Wesner shooting in the International Bunker Trap while Flames freshman Justin Johnson, sophomore Jonathan Britton, and juniors Tommy Hartman and Casey Williams compete in International Sporting Clays.

Those six shooters will join senior Josh Lancaster, junior Landon Dalton, sophomores James Bushnell and Jacob Davis, and freshmen Elijah Labrozzi and Carl Pongs at in the ACUI Sporting Clays, Super Sporting Clays, American Skeet, American Trap, Modified International Trap, and Modified International Skeet events from Tuesday through Friday.

Scores will be posted on the ACUI website's results page.

Liberty's Action Team (3-gun pistol and rifle), posted strong showings at the March 9-10 Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) Collegiate National Championships held at the Civilian Marksmanship Program range in Talladega, Ala.

The team, coached by Michael Lowe, took home a silver medal in the Rimfire Pistol competition, placing behind Vermont and ahead of third-place Michigan State out of eight teams. It also placed sixth out of 12 teams in the Rimfire Rifle-optical sights competition and eighth out of 10 teams in the Rimfire Rifle-iron sights division.

Graduates Luke Riddell and Matthew Simpson, sophomore Anderson Bennett, and freshman Sam Verdoorn were the Flames' medal-winners and were joined by juniors Timothy McFarland and Cody Wesloskie.

"We did extremely well for our first national competition," Hartman said. "I see a lot of great things to come."

Complete results are available online.

Seven team members — freshmen Caisey Duran, Mitchell Feaga, Katherine Gray, and Alec Trenepol, junior Susie Krupp, and seniors Rachel Brinkley and Jonathan Deane — are competing in this weekend's NRA Collegiate Small Bore Club Rifle Championships at Fort Benning, Ga.

Feaga will also represent Liberty at the USA Shooting Junior Olympic Rifle/Pistol National Championships from April 5-12 at the Olympic Shooting Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
