New Sport Management Cognates Announced

April 17, 2018

The Department of Sport Management is excited to announce the addition of four new cognates to the Bachelor of Science in Sport Management major. The four new cognates are:

  • Sport Administration
  • Sport Communication and Public Relations
  • Sport Outreach
  • Venue and Event Management

Students will now have the ability to select a cognate when they declare their major in Sport Management. Each cognate involves four classes specific to that particular content area and will take the place of the directed elective requirements.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer these cognate options to our students,” said Undergraduate Program Director, Chris Amos. “This has been a process several years in the making and will greatly enhance our student learning experience. In addition, this will add a tremendous level of marketability to our students as they seek internships and jobs.”

New classes developed as a part of these cognates include:

  • Communication Technology in Sport (SMGT 330)
  • Policy & Governance in Sport (SMGT 421)
  • Sport Analytics (SMGT 422)
  • Sport Media Strategies (SMGT 430)
  • Guest Service in Sport Venues (SMGT 440)
  • Sport Venue Operations (SMGT 441)

The classes for each cognate will begin in the Fall 2018 semester. Contact the Department of Sport Management for more information.
