About the Department of Sport, Event, and Tourism Management
In 1990 Liberty University began offering undergraduate classes in Sport Management through the School of Education as an alternative to the Physical Education program offered at the university.
The new Department of Sport Management offered a Bachelors in Sport Management and received institutional and SACS approval under the guidance of Drs. Dale Gibson and Roy Yarbrough. The Sport Management program was developed with the vision of educating future sport industry executives and administrators with the skill sets for the growing and changing sport industry. At the time, there were few sport management programs in the nation. Continuing under the School of Education, the first class “Introduction to Sport Management” was offered in 1990 and graduated its first class of four students in the spring of 1991.
In 1994, Liberty University’s Sport Management program was included in the first cohort of sport management programs approved by NASSM/NASPE and was one of the first schools to received COSMA Accreditation in 2011 under the leadership of Dr. Vicky Martin, the former chair. The program has enjoyed a growth of annual enrollment of over 400 students with the addition of a Bachelor of Science in Coaching to the undergraduate program offerings. In the spring of 2009, the department launched a Master of Science in Sport Management with specializations in Sport Administration, Outdoor Adventure Sport, and Tourism. The Master’s program received full COSMA accreditation in the spring of 2015.
The Department of Sport Management is now in its third decade of preparing students for jobs in the sport industry.
